SageWest Health Care to Relocate OB Services to Lander Campus

June 30, 2016

SageWest Health Care announced today that the system will be relocating all OB services to the Lander campus, effective July 1. This move is due to a shortage of OB nurses that is being felt across the nation and throughout the state of Wyoming. “We are proud to offer OB services to our community – it is critical to the overall health of any community,” said Sherrill Sorensen, chief nursing officer (CNO) of SageWest Health Care. “Unfortunately, we have exhausted all options to maintain core staffing at both our Riverton and Lander campuses, and right now, it is imperative that we do what is in the best interest of our patients. Longer-term, we will continue efforts to recruit top-notch nurses to our region and work to find a solution that is right for the communities we serve.” With this relocation, patients can expect the same level of quality care and service. Following the May flood, the Lander campus underwent renovation, and is fully equipped to accommodate anticipated OB patient volumes. “This decision was not made lightly; we realize it will impact a number of people, including our physicians and OB nurses,” said Sorensen. “We really appreciate everyone’s willingness to be flexible at this time.” SageWest has recently hired five graduate nurses, who will undergo a 16-week training program for OB services. The system’s commitment to training these new nurses and preparing them for practice is part of the long-term solution for resolving this nursing shortage and ensuring SageWest Health Care continues to provide comprehensive OB services to the region.
