Give Blood, Give Life

One hour. One donation. Up to three lives saved.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. From trauma victims and cancer patients to those undergoing surgery or organ transplants, donated blood is a lifeline – and you can be the one who provides it.

January is National Blood Donor Month, and there’s no better time to roll up your sleeve and make a difference. It only takes about an hour, and the impact can last a lifetime.

Why Your Donation Matters

Not everyone can donate blood due to medical conditions like anemia or chronic illness. That’s why healthy individuals play a critical role in keeping our blood supply strong. Unfortunately, shortages are common, but your donation helps fill that gap.

Common Concerns, Debunked

If you’ve never donated before, you might have questions or hesitations. Let’s clear up some common myths.

Concern

The Truth
I'm afraid of needles. Most donors only feel a quick pinch. The donation itself takes 7-10 minutes, followed by snacks and rest.
My blood type isn't needed. All blood types are needed, every day. Whether common or rare, your type helps someone.
I'll get sick from donating. Not possible. Sterile, single-use needles are used for each donor.
I don't have time. The full visit takes about an hour. That hour could save a life.
I'm on medication. Most medications don't disqualify you. Check with your doctor or the blood center.
I don't have blood to spare. Adults have 10-12 pints. You'll donate only one and your body replenishes quickly.
I'm too old or recently sick. There's no upper age limit. If you're symptom-free, you're likely eligible.
I have a tattoo. If it was done in a state-regulated shop, you can donate right away. Otherwise, wait three months.
Blood lasts forever. Whole blood lasts only 35 days. That's why regular donations are essential.
Can't they use artificial blood? Not yet. Real blood is still the only option for saving lives.
